Resin Dice: Material Terms, Inclusions, and Care

Resin dice are finished dice commonly described by a resin or polymer material label. The term is useful for browsing, but it is not always a complete chemical specification. A careful record should explain what the source actually says, whether the object is cured, and which visible features are separate from the base material.

What does resin mean?

The IUPAC Gold Book defines resin as a soft solid or highly viscous substance, usually containing prepolymers with reactive groups. In public product language, the word is often used for a material system before curing and for the resulting finished object. IUPAC distinguishes these contexts and notes that a cured epoxide is more precisely called an epoxy polymer.

For a dice catalogue, the practical rule is simple: use “resin” when the manufacturer or other reliable source uses that label, but do not invent an exact polymer formulation. If a source names an epoxy polymer or another specific material, preserve that detail in the evidence notes.

Inclusions, color, and finish

Many resin dice include glitter, foil, pigment, dried botanical material, small objects, layers, or other visual elements. These features should be recorded as inclusions or appearance notes, not silently combined with the base material. A clear die can still contain opaque or reflective inclusions, and a milky or colored die does not reveal its exact chemistry.

Finish is another separate field. Polished faces, matte surfaces, ink-filled numbers, and protective coatings may affect how a die looks and feels. They do not by themselves prove that the die is more accurate, more durable, or easier to read.

Shape matters as much as material

A resin d20 may have sharp edges, rounded edges, or a hybrid profile. The same broad material can be used for different shapes and sizes. When comparing products, record face count, geometry, dimensions, numbering, and finish separately. This keeps a material comparison from accidentally becoming a shape comparison.

Resin and theoretical fairness

A resin label does not prove that a die is fair or unfair. Theoretical probability assumes a defined sample space and often treats outcomes as equally likely. A physical balance claim requires stronger evidence, such as a documented test method, sample size, rolling conditions, and a clear statement of limitations. A short informal roll test should not be rewritten as proof of perfect balance.

Care and handling

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when they are available. If no specific instructions are supplied, conservative care is appropriate: avoid prolonged heat, harsh solvents, and abrasive surfaces; keep inked or coated pieces away from chemicals that may attack the finish; and store sharp-edged pieces so they do not scrape against one another. Do not assume that every resin formulation responds the same way to cleaning products.

  5. Do not make a balance, safety, or durability claim without suitable evidence.
