Metal Dice: Alloys, Weight, Finish, and Evidence

Metal dice are dice marketed or documented as being made partly or wholly from metal. “Metal” is a useful starting category, not a complete specification. A professional record should identify the stated metal or alloy, distinguish a solid die from a cored or plated design, and keep weight, finish, and balance as separate facts.

What should “metal” tell us?

Different metals and alloys have different densities, hardness, corrosion behavior, and workability. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s periodic-table entries illustrate this range: aluminium is described as lightweight and corrosion resistant, while iron and steel have different density and corrosion characteristics. Those material facts do not identify what a particular dice product contains.

For a product record, preserve the manufacturer’s exact wording: for example, a named alloy, a metal plating, or simply “metal.” Do not infer stainless steel, aluminium, zinc, brass, or another alloy from a silver, gold, or dark finish.

Solid, cored, plated, and inlaid designs

A metal die may be solid, hollow, filled with another material, or built with a metal shell and a non-metal core. Some pieces also use plating, painted surfaces, enamel, or separate inlays. These construction details can affect weight, handling, and care, so they belong in their own fields rather than being hidden inside a single material label.

If a source does not disclose the construction, record “not stated.” A heavier feel may suggest a dense material, but it does not prove the composition or structure.

Weight is not balance

Metal dice often feel heavier than similarly sized polymer dice, but a subjective impression is not a measured mass. Even a measured weight does not prove that outcomes are equally likely. Balance depends on the complete object, including geometry, marking depth, material distribution, surface, and rolling conditions.

  • State whether solid, cored, plated, or not disclosed.
  • Record face count, geometry, dimensions, markings, and finish separately.
  • Keep weight measurements and fairness tests in separate evidence fields.
  • Note any maker warnings about surfaces, sound, moisture, or cleaning.
